Overview

The Second Annual Silver Scale Invitational Tarpon Research Tournament is an exclusive,

invitation-only, tag-and-release fishing event designed to advance critical scientific research

on Atlantic tarpon. This unique tournament brings together elite local captains, leading

researchers, and conservation partners in a collaborative effort to better understand and

protect one of the world’s most iconic sportfish.

The Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) supports a thriving recreational fishery and plays

a vital role in coastal tourism economies. Despite their importance, tarpon are particularly

vulnerable due to their life history traits. They mature slowly, often requiring seven to ten

years to reach reproductive age, and can live for more than five decades. These

characteristics, combined with pressures such as fishing impacts and habitat degradation,

make their populations especially sensitive to environmental change.

Because of this, continued scientific research is essential. Tagging and biological data

collection provide valuable insight into migration patterns, habitat use, and overall

population health. This information directly informs fisheries management decisions and

supports long-term sustainability, helping to protect both the ecological and economic

value of the species.

A Collaborative Research Approach

Hosted in Destin–Fort Walton Beach, the Silver Scale Invitational is structured to maximize

both fishing performance and scientific output. Each participating vessel is paired with a

dedicated researcher, creating a real-time data collection platform on the water.

Throughout the tournament, teams conduct multiple forms of tagging, including

conventional, acoustic, and satellite methods, while also collecting biological samples such

as scales and swabs for genetic and diet analysis. Catch verification and documentation are

integrated into the process, ensuring both scientific accuracy and tournament integrity.

This model effectively transforms a traditional fishing tournament into a high-impact

research initiative. It also directly supports and expands the Destin–Fort Walton Beach fish

tagging program, strengthening ongoing efforts to build a robust regional dataset.

Proven Results

The inaugural 2025 event demonstrated the effectiveness of this collaborative model and highlighted the powerful partnership between the fishing and scientific communities. The tournament brought together ten professional captains and seven researchers, including partners from Louisiana State University (LSU) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), with one scientist assigned to each vessel.

The scientific outcomes were substantial. Over the course of the event, 195 tarpon were hooked, with 90 successfully leadered. A total of 36 tarpon were tagged using a combination of conventional, acoustic, and satellite tags, and 67 scale samples were collected for further biological analysis.

These efforts established critical baseline data for the Destin–Fort Walton Beach area, expanded the regional fish tagging dataset, and validated the tournament as an effective and scalable research platform capable of producing meaningful scientific results.

Value of Sponsorship

Supporting the Silver Scale Invitational provides sponsors with a meaningful opportunity to

contribute directly to marine conservation and fisheries research. Sponsorship aligns

organizations with sustainability initiatives that protect coastal resources while reinforcing

a commitment to environmental stewardship.

In addition to its conservation impact, the tournament offers valuable exposure to a highly

engaged audience within the coastal tourism and fishing sectors. Sponsors benefit from

increased visibility among anglers, industry professionals, and community leaders, while

also gaining access to a network of scientists, conservation partners, and influential

stakeholders.

Equally important, sponsorship enables the continuation and expansion of cutting-edge

research efforts. Contributions help fund essential tools such as satellite and acoustic tags,

as well as scientific equipment used to collect and analyze data critical to the long-term

management of the tarpon fishery.
